Rick Mahorn made more than $6 million throughout his playing career in the NBA and currently makes a six-figure income as a Pistons commentator, yet when he went to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy he listed that he and his wife had only $1,101 to their name. It got so bad that he even had to part ways with his NBA Championship ring. How does this happen? Where did all his money go? This tale has been told too many times. Failed investments, houses going under, reckless spending are all reasons why so many athletes, not just Rick Mahorn go bankrupt and struggle to dig themselves out. Check out the rest of our articles for more incredible examples of the amount of money lost by professional athletes.

Scottie Pippen recently worked himself out of one of his bad financial decisions. In 2002, he purchased his own gulf stream jet for $4 million only to find out it needed $1 million in repairs to its engine. Fortunately for Pippen, he sued his attorney who failed to inspect the jet and received a $2 million settlement recently. This merely offsets a number of bad endorsement deals that Pippen bought into throughout his career. Accepting advice by someone who genuinely cares and you can trust, and knows what they’re doing is the most important step to financial success.

Mark Brunell admits he can’t shoulder the burden that is his debt that has continued to pile up over the course of his 17 year career. As a result of poor real estate decisions, Brunell has now accepted he must file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the state of Florida. Brunell expects to be signed later this summer with the New York Jets, but as his career comes closer to the end, the success he once displayed on the field will be overshadowed by his financial nightmares.

Great article indicating the problems athletes can have when they trust family and friends for advice. Most of these family and friends might mean well, but aren’t knowledgeable enough to give the best advice. This decision for Andre Johnson will cost him nearly $20 million.
